Flash cards are a great tool for drilling the note names. Just like we did with treble clef, we are going to simplify things as much as possible, by dividing the bass clef notes into just 4 areas which should make our job a whole lot easier Area 1 The first area we’re going to look at is appropriately called Area 1, which consists of the notes from C3 to C4. The mnemonic devices are a good way to learn the note names in the beginning, but to effectively read music you need to be able to identify each note immediately by sight. In choral music male voice parts are written in bass clef ( with the exception of the tenor part.) How to practice Use the phrase “ Good Boys Do Fine Always” to remember the lines on the bass clef and “ All Cows Eat Grass” to remember the spaces. In treble clef the spaces from bottom to top spell the word “ FACE”. The first letter of each word in the phrase “ Every Good Boy Deserves Fun” can be used to remember the notes written on the lines of the treble clef. You can use mnemonic devices (a learning technique that aids information retention) to learn the names of the music notes on the staff. Music written for a soloist (male or female) is almost always written in treble clef as well. In choral music, female voice parts are written in the treble clef. (No offense bass clef, you’ve got your charm). Treble clef is the clef most often used in vocal music. Step 1: Finding Treble Clef Notes on the Piano Keyboard Usually, we wait until the end of each lesson to get our keyboards and practice together, but today, you need to go ahead and be sitting at your keyboard as we go through each written step of this lesson. A clef is a musical symbol used to indicate the pitch of written notes. In vocal and piano music, there are two different clefs that appear on the staff. There are 5 lines and 4 spaces on the music staff.Įach of these lines and spaces represent an individual note on the keyboard. If you don’t already know the names of the notes on the keyboard, you’ll need to learn them first- Check out this video. The relation between treble clef and bass clef is very simple: The C note below the staff in treble clef is the same music note that the C note above the staff in bass clef.Today I’m going to teach you the names of the music notes on the staff. Relation between treble clef and bass clef Memorizing the patterns of 'line notes' and 'space notes' of the treble and bass clefs is a useful strategy in learning to read music. Nowadays, the use of clefs has been simplified: So each voice had a different clef in the past: Soprano voice Musical notation has often been dedicated to voice, and if there was only one clef, the treble clef for example, it would look like this with a 5 lines staff:Īnd with an 11 lines staff it wouldn't be much better: For example, the viola use the alto clef: All notes on the example above are in fact the same note, the same pitch, these notes are sounding the same, they all are a C note.īut why so many clefs? There are three main explanations:Ĭlefs can be used to avoid ledger lines because music notes with too much ledger lines are difficult to read for the musician:Īs far as possible, the clefs correspond to the registers of instruments.
